Most common myths about car tuning

Along with performing their basic function of transporting quickly and conveniently from one place to another, cars have become family members for many of us, so it’s no surprise that we want to give them the best possible treatment and maintenance. It’s fairly common for a car enthusiast to invest additional money into improving the performance beyond factory standards, which is also known as “tuning”. Improvements usually mean boosting engine power which further requires additional interventions in order for the car to be able to support the additional horsepower. In the article that follows we are busting some most common myths about car tuning.

If tuning was good for my car, it would have been done already in the factory

The factory makes numerous compromises in the design process. Factories follow the principle of standardization in order to achieve an optimal balance between investment and quality, so they put the same aggregate, with certain modifications, into a great number of models. This does not mean that tuning is bad for your car, it’s just that it is not cost-efficient enough for the factory to commit to fine tuning. It is up to the car owners to see if they are happy with the factory settings or they wish to get the most of their cars.

Tuning shortens engine life

More horsepower means greater stress for all the units of the aggregate and more wear of the moving parts. However, this does not necessarily mean that tuning will shorten engine life. If done properly tuning will not leave any consequence on the engine other than improving its performance.

Tuning can void your car warranty

Many car owners are afraid to tune their cars while they are still under warranty and this is very understandable when tuning gets done by a private company. However, if tuning is done by the factory tuner or an authorized tuner, your warranty is safe. The car maker can only be held responsible for the interventions done by the factory or the authorized partner’s service.

Tuning means greater fuel consumption

This is also a myth surrounding the change of the engine’s factory settings. With proper tuning using quality camshafts and engine valves you can get more horsepower and less fuel consumption.

Tuning borders with illegal

According to the Law on road traffic safety change is possible only for personal use and in cases “when the overhaul can improve vehicle safety, technical culture and invention, i.e. enable carrying out specific activities that the vehicle is not manufactured specifically for”, like for example tuning race cars. Motor vehicles and trailers as well as their devices, assemblies and equipment, produced individually or serially or repaired, must be harmonized with the uniform technical requirements of the homologation regulations, meaning that the vehicle has to pass the technical inspection and tests on safety and ecology features. If you do not want to find yourself wondering if the change is done in accordance with the Law, it is best to have the tuning done by a recommended and qualified expert with many years of experience.
