Advanced recycling

TotalEnergies will be constructing one of France’s first advanced recycling plant with Plastic Energy (TotalEnergies 60% / Plastic Energy 40%) in Grandpuits, with a processing capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year. 

This plant will convert plastic wastes into pyrolysis oil which will then be used as feedstock for the production of polymers with identical properties to virgin polymers. In particular, they will be suitable for use in food-grade applications, enabling full circularity for plastics. 

In 2022, TotalEnergies and New Hope Energy have announced a commercial agreement under which New Hope Energy will build an advanced recycling plant in Texas, U.S.A, to transform end-of-life plastic waste into a recycled feedstock. TotalEnergies will then partly purchase and convert that feedstock into virgin-quality polymers.

The New Hope Energy plant is expected to start production in 2025 and will use a patented pyrolysis technology that was developed in partnership with Lummus Technology to process and convert more than 310,000 tons per year of mixed plastic waste. TotalEnergies will use 100,000 tons of this circular feedstock in its Texas-based production units to manufacture high-quality polymers suitable for food-grade applications. 

Plastic Energy, Freepoint Eco-Systems and TotalEnergies announced a strategic partnership in October 2021 for a similar recycling plant in Texas, U.S.A.

This plant, which is a joint venture between Plastic Energy and Freepoint Eco-systems, will have the capacity to recycle 33,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year, and is expected to be operational by mid-2024.

Under the agreement, TotalEnergies will convert the produced pyrolysis oil in its Texas-based production units.
