Increasing the circular use of plastics in a low-carbon economy is the next challenge. TotalEnergies Ambition Towards Carbon Neutrality

In 2020, TotalEnergies unveiled its transformation strategy to become a multi-energy company, as well as its ambition to become a major player in the energy transition, committed to getting to net zero by 2050.  

TotalEnergies has set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality together with society by 2050 for all of our global operations, from production to the use by our customers of the energy products we sell (scopes 1, 2 and 3). ​ 

Our Company is taking action in three areas: ​ 

  • Achieving carbon neutrality for global operations, by 2050 or earlier (scopes 1 and 2);​ 

  • Achieving carbon neutrality worldwide for all indirect emissions from the use by our customers of energy products sold to them, by 2050 or earlier (scope 3); 

  • Achieving carbon neutrality in Europe, from production to use by our customers of the energy products sold, by 2050 or earlier (scopes 1, 2 and 3). 

This ambition, which took shape 2021, already yielded significant progress: 

  • TotalEnergies reduced the share of petroleum products in its sales mix to 44% (from 65% in 2015), lowering the greenhouse gas emissions related to petroleum products used by its customers (Scope 3) by 19%.

  • TotalEnergies also achieved a 20% decrease in emissions from its operated facilities (Scope 1+2) compared to 2015 and a 14% reduction in the carbon footprint of the products sold in Europe (vs 2015).
